I was trying to package Typst for them once. The IRC barely gave me any help, nor did the mailing list, so I had to guess a lot of things on my own. I ended up spending several hours working on it and fine tuning it to what the documentation wanted as much as I could. Then I finally made the submission, which was ignored for an entire year, before finally being rejected. It’s clear that the package repository has a severe lack of packages, but if there’s no clear way to contribute, then idk how anyone can take the project seriously.

I’ve also encountered bugs that made the tools unusable on my laptop that similarly got no response on IRC and the mailing lists.

Meanwhile on Nix, if I submit an issue on Nixpkgs, it will usually get resolved by the maintainer in 24 hours, or at most a week if it’s a larger change, and I don’t even have to do anything, and things aren’t constantly broken on aarch64.

From the last incident, there was Aux that wanted to create an alternative for the Nix ecosystem, but it died before it even started. Right now what we do have is Lix (what I’m currently using) and Tvix as an alternative for the Nix program, and Guix as an alternative ecosystem that’s nowhere near as complete.

Guix basically only has the official docs (which has a lot missing in my experience), a single Youtube channel (System Crafters), official issues/mailing list/IRC, System Crafters forum, the source code, toys.whereis.social, and rarely a blog post or random git repo that might have the information you need

For Linux it could be tied in with terminal commands using an LLM:

“Install Firefox” -> apt install firefox

“Open Firefox” - > firefox & disown

aichat --execute already turns natural language into terminal commands through any OpenAI-compatible API (and OpenRouter provides free Deepseek R1/Kimi K2 access), so there just needs to be speech-to-text.

Grindr doesn’t even work on GrapheneOS, it’s security checks are insane. I tried the modded Grindr app and they instantly banned my account, so I decided the app isn’t worth my time.

I think JMP.chat supports RCS, and it lets you text through Cheogram or another XMPP client. I believe it also upgrades the connection if both users are using Cheogram similar to Signal when it supported SMS

I was wondering what everyone’s thoughts on these were:

1. It doesn’t work on GrapheneOS either, so I got separate devices I carry with me that do the tap-to-pay instead, and they’ve been a godsend. They’re super compact as well and came for free when I opened the accounts.

2. I don’t own a car, on ebike I use my screen.

3. Normally I use my fingers. If they’re not available I yell cuss words at my phone until they’re available again.

I used to never close tabs and they would accumulate as I kept doing more web searches and other activities. Now when I need to do stuff I usually open a new window instead for different tasks and if I need to free up RAM then I start closing other windows for tasks I’m not doing anymore so it closes all of the related tabs at the same time

Nowadays with Apple, the bigger issue is the ARM Linux ecosystem being neglected in terms of support rather than the hardware compatibility (that is for M1/M2). The hardware for the most part works except for USB-HDMI and fingerprint (which didn’t work on my HP laptop either).

Right now I use mainly Firefox, not because I like it but because it comes with my distro (whereas LibreWolf requires Flatpak) making it work well with the PWA project and it supports weird hacks necessary to install Widevine on my system so I can listen to Tidal. I also have LibreWolf installed with data set to delete on close and set up to proxy over Tor and I2P using privoxy and has LibRedirect installed which is set up to redirect to the corresponding onion/i2p domains. I was trying to install Zen Browser using the Guix package manager earlier but had problems, but I might try again later.

On Android, I use Vanadium for sites I stay logged into, Cromite with auto clearning history for other stuff, and Ironfox for Kagi and to use plugins like LibRedirect.

also on debian or ubuntu based distros you have the biggest selection of programs available.

AUR and nixpkgs have a massive amount of packages and are more up-to-date, and basically anything not on there can be installed with Flatpak

Asahi Linux doesn’t support encryption and getting it to work requires a lot of steps and that I reinstall it which I don’t have time for, so I don’t have it enabled on my laptop, and if it gets stolen or confiscated I’m fucked.

I have it enabled on my server and phone.
