The session needs to be active! If the screen sleeps or is locked it wont connect. This will be fixed in Fedora 44 (soon to be released) but there is an extension that can be used as a quick fix in the meantime.

LibreOffice Writer can also keep track of changes and it is compatible with Word 👍

I use TrueNAS, which supports TimeMachine out of the box and I have set up Samba-shares to make it simple for family members to drop files in a shared folder. Some of them also have a personal folder. This works on Linux, Windows and MacOS. I also use Wireguard to make sure they always have access to the share.

TrueNAS has a learning curve, but it is reasonably well documented and if you spend some time up front, it pays of.

I use an HP EliteDesk 800 Mini with two boot disks for redundancy and several disks connected trough USB3. Using USB disks are discouraged by TrueNAS but it has worked fine for several years for my low budget setup.

Valves choices the last few years are making me more optimistic that a Linux phone ecosystem could grow and improve. Sideloading APKs on an ARM-based easy-to-use linux system? Nice! It is possible using Waydroid etc today, but it is not very polished.

I started my Linux journey back in 2011 with Arch on my MacBookPro 17". I had a great time and enjoyed the steep learning curve, but around 2018 I needed something that just worked to keep myself from fiddling to much with the OS and get to work on other tasks, and settled for Fedora. The last few years i have very much enjoyed Fedora Silverblue, but there are still a couple of sharp edges around video codecs and the browser. But that is about it.

Fedora keeps me productive!

I also supprised myself a few years back when I ditched Arch Linux (after 10 years) for Fedora! I now use Fedora Silverblue, but would also reccomend having a look at the uBlue variants for different flavoring.

RDP has been the default on Fedora since version 40 (or was it 41?) and it has been a true joy to use! Remoting in to help family and friends has been as simple as set and forget, and very secure since I use it via my VPN (no public endpoint).

I use Remmina to connect though, not GNOME connect, as Remmina is more configurable.

I use Fedora with GNOME for my parents and other family members. Some have used Windows prior, some have not used computers at all really, only iPads. They all get along very well on GNOME!

I have started using Silverblue the last year, which simplify things even further. Combined with the excellent remote controll functionality, it has been a really pleasant experience both for me and them.

If you can find a secound hand Fujitsu R727, they are great linux tablets! But they are not as common, in my experience.

It has RSS built-in, but since it is a static site generator, it does not support ActivityPub out of the box. But I do think I have seen implementations with some custom JavaScript.

I have been running this for a year on my old HP EliteDesk 800 SFF (G2) with 64GB RAM, and it performes great on the smallest models (up til 8B) only on CPU. I run Ollama and OpenWebUI in containers/LXC in Proxmox. It’s not as smart as ChatGPT, but it can be suprisingly capable for everyday tasks!

OtterWiki looks awesome! The combination of markdown, git and a web interface is powerful.

I use Navidrome, it’s a single binary and gives you your own Spotify, kinda. It can be use with many other apps, in addition to the web interface, as it supports the subsonic protocol.
