It meets their needs and preferences, simple as that. I tried Arch in like 2008, and thought people were crazy for all the trouble it took back then. Nowadays there’s a lot of nice distros built on it, so you can get the benefits (such as they may be) without all the low-level tinkering.

Check out Yunohost. In my experience it is way easier to setup and manage than docker. I’ve been using it for years and it continues to improve and add more supported software.

Drop it on a cop from a high window.

I couldn’t find any “about” info anywhere.

Who is the author of this response?

Came here to say pretty much the same thing. I basically already host “disroot” services for myself.

I run it with Yunohost.

VPS is not that much, especially if you aren’t storing a ton of media. Digital Ocean and Hetzner are good places to look. This will also prevent some networking headaches you’re likely to have hosting it “on prem”.
If part of your reason for doing this is to involve the kids in the process, then it’s better to do it locally. Someone in the org has or can find an unused desktop computer that you guys can have fun with for pretty much zero cost. You will probably have trouble trying to connect to it from outside your network though.

I can think of few things more boring than databases. I just want my files synced and stored.

Love my Navidrome server, though I use Substreamer on Android since it’s “free” and free.
I already don’t have any of those things on my de-googled android. I’m used to it. Sure, they would be nice, but it’s not a dealbreaker that I have to tap a card instead of my phone, or use Bluetooth instead of carplay, or type on my phone instead of talking to it.

A thing about Linux is that there’s usually like 10 different ways to accomplish something. If you hit a dead end in terms of your ability or tolerance for frustration… just go back to square one and find a different approach. For games, I recommend starting with Steam.
Same here. Started with Feisty Fawn in 2007. Had so much fun with compiz lol.

I’m not a developer, but I want to use apps that aren’t available on the official store.

Me, a hacker, targeting anyone who says they use Arch btw.

I’ve got the 20TB box for my Jellyfin library. Works great.

For me, at least, that feeling is because I just like knowing my software is up to date. Only rarely do I come across an issue that is solved by a newer version, but that’s just me I’m sure. I definitely see the appeal to not having to think about your desktop applications individually.
After yoloing it for years, I finally deployed an offaite backup this month. I also host on Nextcloud (at my house). While I do have a local disk backing up my Nextcloud install, I didn’t have any backups of the external media hosting my photos.
Finally, I ordered a 10TB external drive and plugged it into a raspberry pi I had sitting around. Using wireguard and restic, I now have an offsite backup at a friend’s house!
