I can relate. I can emphasize with someone who’s learned every nuance of a language, and after 30-40 years suddenly these kids come in with their strange hieroglyphics slowly replacing everything you’ve worked on.

it feels sucky to see all my hours of hard work getting trashed without a second thought.
I’m an electronic security installer. You know how many times I’ve done stuff like install a complete 40+ camera CCTV system at a new store under construction only to be back at the same store a year later ripping it all out when it goes out of business? I know what that feels like.
Worst is when you come around for a regular store equipment refresh and recognize something you installed at that store ten years ago and start feeling real old…
Good luck wherever life takes you now.
I remember the USAF handing me an M16 at 18 years old where all I’ve ever handled before that was even close was the NES zapper.
It was mostly a joke. I was just trying to mess with people 😉
It’s for people to memorize hundreds of arcane shortcuts and shit so they can feel like a smug hacker and gloat over the rest of us using other editors and getting just as much done as they are.
Also for graybeards that haven’t realized it’s not 1985 anymore.
Damn no wonder Balmer was so shook in the early 2000s.

I wouldn’t buy a $500 device where the manufacturer guarantees certain games to work but then doesn’t help me get them working if I need them.
Or that they don’t have support?
Not specifically the whole Linux/Proton/Game stack. That’s Valve’s bread and butter, not Canonical or Redhat.
Go ahead, call Redhat and tell them you can’t get Skyrim to run, see how far that gets you.
Or rather, there’s someone who isn’t going away anytime soon and someone who you can go to if their shit screws up, someone with an actual address and support number, and it’s not just a Github issue tracker page that hasn’t been seen by the owner in months.
Some people want that peace of mind. Some people aren’t built to scour the internet for hours to maybe find solutions to their problems.
If there’s only one physical ethernet port, I’m not sure why there are two wired connections. You try deleting the inactive one? Could have been a bug in an update script that hosed it.
Linux and Windows are, I think, too different conceptually
That is correct. Linux is a UNIX variant/clone, one of many. UNIX isn’t just an OS, it’s an entire concept on how to build and organize an OS. People keep wanting it to be Windows, but it will never be Windows. I wish it could just stand on its own as a flexible, open, UNIX-like system with its own strengths, not just be a drop-in replacement for Windows on the desktop. Let’s make the UNIX way of doing things the normal, everyday way of doing things.
Because Wine and Proton exist. And they can run much more recent software, sometimes faster than on Windows. It’s a duplicated effort with not much benefit. Why limit yourself to just Windows programs when you can run Linux AND Windows programs on the same OS?
“I didn’t want to play that game anyway.”
Just wait until they discover rm, mv, and mkdir!
surely SUSE gets twice the blame, Red Hat gets 19 times the blame and Google gets 180 times the blame? (Not to mention Amazon, Meta, NVIDIA, etc.
Well…yeah?
I’m also talking about people like this that almost never get recognition until something huge we all depend on becomes a huge problem: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XZ_Utils_backdoor
Those “neckbeards in the basement” created the very thing Canonical is trying to make its own. It’s just another corporation trying to profit off the back of FOSS developer labor.
Maybe have a bit more respect for hardworking programmers that are keeping the world spinning, with many doing it for no compensation.
It’s alright, I program C++ and barely understand this shit either. Kernel/OS devs are a different breed.
